Meet Fort Valley City Council

The City of Fort Valley operates under a mayor-council form of government, consisting of a mayor and six council members, each elected to serve a four-year term. The mayor serves as the city’s chief elected official and presides over the City Council, which functions as the legislative and policy-making body. From among its members, the council elects a mayor pro-tem annually to serve in the mayor’s absence or when otherwise required.

The City Council holds the authority to adopt ordinances, resolutions, and regulations that govern the city’s operations and ensure the welfare of its residents. As granted by the city charter, the council also has the power to levy and collect various forms of revenue, including property taxes, business license fees, franchise fees, beer and wine taxes, permit fees, hotel/motel occupancy taxes, and local sales taxes. These revenue sources support the city’s infrastructure, services, and administrative functions.

To manage day-to-day operations, the mayor and council are responsible for appointing key administrative officials, including the city administrator, city clerk, and assistant city clerk. These appointed roles support the effective implementation of city policies and the delivery of public services.

To qualify as a candidate for mayor or city council, individuals must have maintained legal residency within the City of Fort Valley for at least one year immediately prior to the election and must continue to reside in the city throughout their term. Additionally, candidates must be registered voters in the city’s municipal elections and meet the eligibility requirements established for members of the Georgia House of Representatives, as outlined in the Georgia Constitution, including any future amendments.
