The City of Fort Valley Public Works Department is responsible for the daily operation of sanitation services. This department services more than 3,000 residential customers, providing once-a-week collection of garbage, yard waste, and bulk items. The monthly charge for residential pickup is $25 and is added to your monthly utility bill. Solid waste collection is also available for commercial businesses.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Bulky household trash and white goods such as carpet, appliances, furniture, mattresses, etc., are also picked up on a weekly basis and should be placed alongside the rollout cart. To dispose of refrigerators, remove the freon gas and place a visible label on the appliance stating freon has been removed. The City of Fort Valley does not operate a landfill, but bulk waste on a trailer can be dumped at the Public Works Department on South Camellia Blvd. A fee of $30 per ton is assessed. Solid waste is disposed of in a landfill in Taylor County. This service is free to residents of Fort Valley, with a utility bill and identification required.<\/p>

Services Not Provided by the City<\/strong><\/p>

  • The city does not provide roll-off sanitation service for construction or demolition debris. For a list of local providers, contact Public Works at 478-825-2615.<\/li>
  • The city does not currently provide curbside recycling. The local recycling effort is operated by the Peach County Recycle and Convenience Center (Fort Valley) at 508 Old Macon Rd., Fort Valley, GA.     The city provides commercial collection services using front-end loading trucks and dumpsters picked up on a schedule agreed to by the customer and city.     The Georgia Comprehensive Solid Waste Act requires the City of Fort Valley to develop a strategy for reducing the amount of solid waste going into landfills and other disposal facilities. This reduction may be accomplished by many techniques, including recycling materials such as plastic, aluminum, and newspaper. It can also be accomplished by diverting yard waste from disposal facilities into backyard or other composting operations. Many other methods for reducing our local waste stream are also available. Most of these methods involve your cooperation and effort.<\/p>

    The Act also requires all local governments to disclose to its citizens the full cost of providing solid waste management services.     The City of Fort Valley offers bi-weekly curbside leaf and limb collection service to city residents as an environmentally-conscious means for disposing of yard waste. The city collects yard waste in the form of grass, leaves, and brush. We encourage all residents to participate in some form of yard waste reuse, whether it is this program, backyard composting, or the use of a mulching lawn mower.<\/p>

    Yard waste and household garbage are collected on the same day, and yard waste is recycled at the city’s public works facility.<\/p>

    Leaf and Limb Collection Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>

    To ensure that your yard waste is picked up, keep these guidelines handy:<\/p>

    • Items allowed curbside<\/strong>: leaves, straw, hedge, shrub, tree trimmings, grass, and other inert materials resulting from general residential yard cleaning. White goods (no more than 3 pieces per week per residence) such as carpet, appliances, furniture, mattresses, etc.<\/li>
    • Place yard waste curbside on regular household collection days<\/strong>.<\/li>
    • Make sure tree limbs are no larger than six inches in diameter<\/strong>. They can be any length.<\/li>
    • Stack tree limbs loosely with cut ends toward the street<\/strong>.<\/li>
    • Keep limb or brush piles no larger than 3x8x3 feet<\/strong>, the equivalent of a small pick-up truckload.<\/li>
    • When disposing of garden material, remember to shake off the dirt<\/strong>.<\/li>
    • Do not mix yard waste with household waste or other items<\/strong>.<\/li>
    • Remember, leaf and limb crews cannot pick up<\/strong>:
      • Wood containing nails or metal<\/li>
      • Bags that weigh more than 50 lbs<\/li>
      • Logs, firewood, stumps, root balls<\/li>
      • Debris from major tree removal or land clearing<\/li>

          Composting<\/h2>

          Place leaves and grass in a pile on your property. Add water and turn the pile from time to time. After the leaves and grass have decomposed, the finished compost may be worked into the soil as an amendment. This provides nutrients and helps the soil retain moisture.<\/p>
